What are card velocity limits?

Card velocity limits are a set of maximum spend limits assigned to your virtual card by the card issuer.

The limits are put in place to control spending and act as a fraud prevention mechanism. The standard velocity limits are typically applied at a currency level, with each currency having a default set of limits, known as a "velocity group".

Each velocity group has a:

  • Single transaction limit
  • Daily transaction limit
  • Monthly transaction limit
  • Annual/lifetime transaction limit

Card velocity limits are different to the card limit  set when creating a card via the API or our portal, and the lower of the two will apply to each card you create. If an attempted authorisation exceeds the card velocity limit the authorisation will decline.

You can find our more information on how to request a change to the velocity limits here
