What's a Merchant Category Code (MCC)?
Learn what a Merchant Category Code (MCC) is and how it's used to control where your Pax2Pay cards can be spent.
A Merchant Category Code (MCC) is a standard four digit code that identifies the type of business a merchant runs — for example, retail, travel, or dining.
Every Pax2Pay card is set up with a list of approved MCCs, and it's intended for use only within those categories. For most Pax2Pay customers, this means categories within the travel industry, since that's what the card is designed for. If a card is used, or someone tries to use it, at a merchant outside its approved categories, Pax2Pay treats this as a fraud risk signal — repeated attempts can automatically freeze the card.
